Celebrating Calgary’s Drag Royalty: A Night of Glamour and Giving
This past weekend, Calgary’s LGBTQ+ community gathered for a dazzling night of celebration, philanthropy, and tradition as the Imperial Sovereign Court of the Chinook Arch
(ISCCA) crowned its new royalty. The 43rd annual coronation ball, held at the Hyatt Regency Hotel, was a sold-out spectacle filled with glitz, glamour, and a strong commitment to community service.
A Legacy of Giving
The ISCCA, Calgary’s longest-running LGBTQ+ organization, blends the art of drag performance with meaningful charitable efforts. Every year, members are elected to lead fundraising and outreach initiatives, ensuring that the organization continues to make a difference in the lives of many.
This year, Diane Kirkhope-Fjaagesund (Devious Harte Tron) and Denise Sluggett (Sluggo Sensation Boink) were crowned as emperor and empress. Their leadership will guide the organization’s philanthropic efforts, which include raising funds for local charities such as the SHARP Foundation, HIV Community Link, and the Children’s Wish Foundation.
The coronation weekend went beyond titles and pageantry, showcasing true community solidarity. With attendees from across North America, the event raised around $50,000 to support those living with or at risk of HIV/AIDS and fund student bursaries.
More Than Just a Show
Beyond the extravagant costumes and towering crowns, ISCCA’s mission remains deeply rooted in service. Each elected leader commits to at least 10 hours of volunteer work while spearheading various fundraising initiatives throughout the year. Their efforts help create a more inclusive, supportive community where LGBTQ+ individuals can thrive.
As the newly crowned royalty step into their roles, their reign is set to be one of impact, inclusivity, and continued service to Calgary’s LGBTQ+ and at-risk communities. With their leadership, ISCCA will carry forward its four-decade legacy of making a difference—one dazzling event at a time.
